Jet Aviation offers comprehensive emissions management service for EU ETS compliance

To help control greenhouse gas pollution, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union (EU) issued a directive in February 2005 requiring all aircraft operators flying into or out of any airport within the EU to participate in the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) from 2012. Non- compliance with the EU ETS will result in monetary penalties or suspension of flight permission within the EU.

The EU ETS, also known as Cap & Trade, aims to set progressively tougher annual CO₂ emission limits or caps within the EU and will utilize economic incentives to compel adherence to these limits.

After defining a total annual CO₂ emissions target, the managing authority will allocate “emission permits” to aircraft operators & owners accordingly, each worth 1 metric tonne of CO₂ emission, which must then be forfeited per actual annual emissions. The remaining allowance can then be “traded” on the European Energy Exchange market, essentially rewarding those with lower emissions and punishing high emitters.
